Besides Tinker Hatfield, Smith is arguably the most famous sneaker designer of all time (with an honorable mention to Bruce Kilgore, who designed the Air Force 1) 🙏

He began his career at New Balance in 1986, designing several sneakers that have become major fashion staples in 2024. The New Balance 550s might be everywhere right now, but Smith deserves credit for creating a sneaker decades ago that still captivates mass audiences—a truly timeless design ♾️
As head of industrial design at YEEZY, though the title was somewhat vague, Smith presumably designed numerous sneakers for Kanye. We know he designed the Wave Runner (an absolute banger with beautiful design) and various other YEEZY sneakers 😮💨

Crocs is now making moves in the sneaker space, with Salehe Bembury already creating a sneaker following the massive success of his Crocs Pollex Clogs. I'm excited to see what Salehe and Smith might cook up together. I spotted someone in the comments asking "why didn't Nike offer him a position?" to which Steven reportedly replied "they had a chance and blew it." Though I'll admit this is all hearsay—I can't even find the comment anymore, so take it with a grain of salt 🧂
